Winthrop and Alice had six children: Lewis Morton, Winthrop Chandler, John P., Hugo, Guy and a daughter Alice Rutherfurd. Their mother Alice Morton Rutherfurd died suddenly on June 19, 1917 from an appendicitis at the age of 38. Their father Winthrop Chandler hired Lucy Mercer as a governess of the children. Miss Lucy Mercer supported and loved these children and they returned this love in full measure.
Sadly on February 5, 1920, the eve of his father Winthrop's wedding to Lucy Mercer, Lewis Morton died from influenza at the age of sixteen at his grandfather's (Levi P. Morton) residence at 1500 Rhode Island Avenue in Washington D.C. His father, Winthrop Chandler Rutherfurd had recently lived at The Lafayette in Washington D.C. The family maintained homes in New York City, Aiken SC and Allamuchy NJ.
Young Lewis Morton was laid to rest in the family plot at Tranquility Cemetery, near their Allamuchy estate in New Jersey.
