Lars was born in Nittedal, Akershus, Norway. He was born Lars Nikolaisen Johnsen and changed his name to Lars Hagbart Ostlie when he came to the United States. Lars was born to Nicholai Johnsen and Maren Andreasdotter. He emigrated to the United States from Oslo, Norway on June 1st 1906. He departed from Liverpool, England aboard the Oceanic on June 6th 1906 and arrived in New York, New York port on June 14th, 1906 according to Passenger lists but according to his petition for naturalization it says he arrived in New York on June 17th 1906. He married Clara Eliza Overvig on April 24th 1908. Lars became a Naturalized citizen of the United States of America on May 8th 1916. Lars and Clara had 11 children together.
