Death of Charles VonLuenen.
Our readers will be pained to learn of the death of Charles VonLuenen, a former old and much respected citizen of Holt county, which occurred in St. Joseph last Sunday morning.
Mr. VonLuenen was born at Luene, province of Westphalia, Germany, in 1807 and emigrated to the United States in 1818, settling at Johnstown, Pa., where he remained until about eleven years ago when he removed to Holt county, Mo.
For several years he was a resident of this city, afterwards removing to Forest City, where he remained until after the death of his wife, five years ago. He then removed to St. Joseph where he resided with his daughter until the time of his death.
Last week he visited his daughter, Mrs. Luckhardt of this city, and while here paid a visit to his wife's grave in the Union cemetery. Before leaving the cemetery he was taken ill; but, after reaching Mr. Luckhardt's residence, felt somewhat better and the next morning (Friday) insisted on returning to St. Joseph. Mr. Luckhardt accompanied him, and two hours after arriving there he fell into a stupor from which he never aroused.
His death occurred at twenty minutes before six o'clock on Sunday morning. It may be here mentioned as a singular circumstance, that his watch-a gold repeater which he had worn for twenty five years-stopped running at the precise minute of his death.
The remains of the deceased were interred in the Union cemetery near this city on Monday, being followed to the grave by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends.
Mr. VonLuenen was the father of seven children, of whom live are now living as follows: Mrs. George P. Luckhardt of this city; Charles VonLuenen and Lewis VonLuenen of Johnstown.Pa., Mrs. J. W. Zook of St. Joseph and Mrs. Henry Thomas of Craig. Two daughters Mr. Levi Zook and Mrs. S. P. Jewell died several years ago.
Mr. VonLuenen was a man of fine education, a devoted parent and a warm hearted friend. By all who enjoyed his intimate acquaintance he was greatly beloved.
He left an estate valued at about $35,000. Levi Zook is the executor of his will.
