He was born March 26, 1930 in Stewart County, a son of Frank Sykes and Ada Cottrell Sykes.
He was retired from Prairie Farms Dairy as a dock worker, and worked at Tri City Grocery until they closed.
He was a veteran of the Army and served during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Cunningham Sykes; stepmother, Iris Sykes, of Granite City; two sons, Kevin Sykes and Randy Miller, both of Granite City; one daughter, Karen Nemsky, of Granite City; three sisters, Birdie Fenton and Sandra Thomas, both of Granite City; and Janice Moore, of O'Fallon, Il.; and four grandsons.
Memorial may be made to the American Cancer Society.
The funeral was at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City with Rev. Norman Fenton officiating.
Burial was in Lake View Memorial Gardens, Belleville, IL.
