Dr. Thomas West is the son of Francis West (1606–1692) and Margery Reeves (1608–1672), both of Duxbury, Plymouth Colony. Dr. Thomas West moved to Martha's Vineyard about 1673, and is the ancestor of all the West's on that island. He is the first known doctor on Martha's Vineyard, and also seems to have been a lawyer as well, as he is called "The King's Attorney" in 1681, and "Their Majesties Attorney" in 1690. Dr. West and his wife became members of the Sabbatarian Church in Newport, Rhode Island in 1692, but in 1702 he was excommunicated for not keeping the tenets of the church.

His Will dated 15 January 1698 was probated 11 October 1706.
