Death: Feb. 11, 2002

Actor. He was born in Beeston, near Nottingham, but was brought up in Hayes in Middlesex, where his father (a toolmaker) had moved to find work during the depression. He studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama and, during the 1950s, went on to appear in many British films set in the Second World War, although the parts for which he is best remembered are in Hitchcock's "Frenzy" (1972); as the Dutch detective Van Der Valk in a television series of the 1970s; and as Orde Wingate, whom he played twice: in a British television series of 1976, and in the American film "A Woman Named Golda". His last film was "Rancid Aluminium" (2002) and his last appearance on the London stage was in "Art", during the run of which he was taken ill. He was being cared for at the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford, Surrey, when he died of a heart attack. His funeral service took place on the 21st. February at Guildford Crematorium, after which his ashes were removed by the funeral director. In 1955, Barry Foster married Judith Shergold, the singer and actress. They had three children. Both of their daughters, Miranda and Joanna, have become actresses. (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
