Jess R. King, 72, died Saturday (Aug. 4, 2007) at his residence in Grant Town.

He was born Aug. 8, 1934, in Grant Town, the son of the late Jess Frank and Rose Helen King.

Jess worked for several mines in the northern part of West Virginia for 42 years. He retired as a mine foreman from A.E.P. Martinka Mine Coal Co. in July 1994. He was catholic by faith and a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Watson. Jess was a veteran of the United States Army from 1960 to 1962.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Jean Harden King; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark J. and Lisa King of Stafford, Va., and Bradley W. and Janie King of Falling Waters; five grandchildren, Jessica and Phillip, Anthony, Katie and Grace King. Jess is also survived by two sisters and one brother-in-law, Leona and Arthur Puskas of Grant Town and Pola Honce of Bridgeport; nieces, Kathy A. Puskas of Grant Town, Cathy R. Malloy and her husband Mike of Colorado, Brenda Heard and her husband Rob of Illinois, and Debbie Horning and her husband Mike of Buffalo, N.Y.; and nephews, Arthur Lee Puskas of Leesburg, Joey Honce and his wife Cheryl of Bridgeport, Gary Heard and his wife Anita of Illinois, and Fred Heard and his wife Martha of Washington.

In addition to his parents, Jess is preceded in death by a sister, Jennie Heard; a brother, Henry King; a nephew, Stephen Puskas; and three brothers-in-law, Joe Honce, Fred Heard and Don Herndon.

In his younger years, Jess was an avid hunter and loved to fish. Then as he grew older, he loved his garden, flowers, birds, deer, squirrels and little skunks.

He adored and loved his five grandchildren and really enjoyed telling them stories. They were the apples of his eye. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He just loved all people. Jess had a good sense of humor and was strong willed.

His favorite lines were: "I have to do it all" and "Don't do as I do but do as I say."
