Born August 15, 1877, in Simpson County, Kentucky, and married Minnie L. Shumway in Seattle, Washington, August 10, 1902. After he attended schools in Simpson County, he took a law course at Valparaiso, Indiana, though he never practiced that profession. In 1944, Josiah and Minnie moved to California, and lived twelve miles from Sacramento, near Fair Oaks. On the 17th of January, 1949, Josiah passed-away, and was buried in Portland, Oregon.

He was a Past Patron of the Mt. Hood, No. 144 Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and a Shriner, with his membership in Portland. In December, 1922, he became Superintendent of the Oregon Masonic and Eastern Star Home at Forest Grove, twenty-five miles from Portland, and Mrs. Roark was the Matron of the Home. In December, 1926, he resigned as Superintendent to become a salesman for The New York Life Insurance Company and enjoyed a fine business and had a wide circle of friends.
