George F. Scates, of Elyria, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2012, in EMH following a lengthy illness. He was born May 13, 1935 in Cleveland.

George Scates was a veteran of the Korean War where he served proudly in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Ticonderoga from 1952-56. He was a member of the Teamsters 407 and received an award for driving 8 million miles without and accident. He was a farmer with his sons in both North Ridgeville, Ohio, and in Grafton, Ohio.

George is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years Ruth (Ruggles) Scates, of Elyria; two sons, John (Donna) Scates, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Jim, of Grafton; four grandchildren, Kenneth, of Las Vegas, Matthew, of Punta Gorda, and Christina and James, of Grafton. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Diana (Thomas) Ried, of Castalia, and Rick (Tracey)Reiman, of Avon Lake, Ohio; and four stepgrandchildren, Jonathan and Jeremy Reiman, of Elyria, Tom, of Sandusky, and Megan Ried, of Castalia.

Mr. Scates was preceded in death by his son Kenneth G. Scates; his father Wilbur Scates; his brother Jack Scates; and his sister Jean Lewis Daniel.

Friends will be received from 5 p.m. Thursday, July 5, until services at 8 p.m. at Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria. The Rev. Beth McKee, Chaplain of Wesleyan Village, will officiate. Burial will be at Meadow Green Memorial Park in Huron with full military honors provided by VFW Post 1079.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer society.
