Lyda Fisher Dies On Eve Of Departure For East To Serve Prison Term
Local Woman Under Sentence In Federal Court Here
Victim of Over Dose of Drug, Self Administered While Awaiting Removal to Vermont Institution

Lyda Fisher, who was under a federal sentence of two years in the government prison at Rutland, Vermont, died at 6:30 o'clock last night at a local hospital as a result of poising by drugs, self-administered when she was a prisoner in the Kanawha county jail, awaiting to the transportation to the Vermont institution.

Miss Fisher took more than a hundred grains of veronal, a sleeping producing drug, last Thursday. She was removed to the hospital at 8:40 o'clock Thursday evening. Her condition was critical for the succeeding two days, the patient hovering between life and death.

The death of Miss Fisher removed from the city a notorious character.

She had been repeatedly charged by federal and state authorities in illicit transactions with liquor. She was sentenced more than a year ago by Federal Judge McClintic to serve two years in a New Jersey prison. While in the Kanawha county jail she became seriously ill with appendicitis and was taken to a hospital where she underwent an operation.

After being discharged from the hospital, Miss Fisher went to her home to recuperate.
When officials made an investigation of her condition a short time later, they ascertained that she had disappeared.

About a month ago she was arrested at Lynchburg by the United States marshall of the eastern district of Virginia, on a capias issued by the local tribunal. She was brought back to Charleston and placed in the Kanawha county jail.

Last week Miss Fisher was taken before Judge McClinic and the latter transferred her place of incarceration to the Rutland, Vermont prison because the New Jersey Institution had been overcrowded. While awaiting transportation to Vermont, she took the drug.

The body was taken in charge by Barlow's and funeral services probably will be held Monday. Burial will take place here. Detailed arrangements had not been completed.

The deceased is survived by three sisters and four brothers.
