Robert Elgin Hyler, 74, of Puyallup, Wash., a retired lieutenant commander and former resident of Pacific Grove, died of a heart attack Thursday at his home. He was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Sacramento, and lived in Pacific Grove most of his life, moving to Puyallup seven years ago. He was the younger son of the late Elmarie Dyke of Pacific Grove, a local radio commentator and longtime director of the Feast of Lanterns in Pacific Grove. A 1940 graduate of Pacific Grove High School, he earned a bachelor's degree at University of Montana in Missoula. Mr. Hyler was retired from the Navy and served as an intelligence officer in naval aviation in the South Pacific during World War II and in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He then owned Lighthouse Realty, retiring a second time in 1984. He was a member of the American Legion, the veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; three sons, Elgin of Ardmore, Pa., John of South San Francisco and Robert of Houston; a daughter, Margaret Carey of Phoenix; two stepsons, Dana Winslow and Jeffry Winslow, both of the Tacoma area; three stepdaughters, Donna Grayson and Denise Williams, both of the Tacoma area, and Melissa Furter of Monterey; a brother, Bill of Pebble Beach; and 12 grandchildren. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Paul Mortuary. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove.

Robert (Bob) Hyler, 74, passed away May 22, 1997. He was born Sept. 25, 1922 in Sacramento, CA and had resided in the Puyallup - Tacoma area for 7 years. He was a retired Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, serving in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Bob was a member of the Puyallup V.F.W. Post #2224, Wilkeson Eagles Lodge, and the Lakewood Moose Lodge. Survived by his wife, Virginia; sons, Elgin, Christopher, and Robert Hyler; daughter, Carey Hyler; step sons, Dana Winslow (Vicki) and Jeffry Winslow; step daughters, Donna Grayson (Don), Denise Williams, and Melissa Furter (Robert); 12 grandchildren; brother, Bill Hyler (Olive); and 3 nieces. Services and interment will be in Pacific Grove, CA. Local arrangements by Powers Funeral Home of Puyallup.

Robert Elgin "Bob" Hyler, 74 ('40, of Puyallup, WA, d May 1997) died very unexpectedlyof respiratory arrest, however, he had been suffering from a mild asthma condition. Excepting his years in the US Navy, where he retired as a Lt. Cdr. And the last several years of his life, he was a lifelong resident of the Peninsula. Bob excelled in sports, principally in football and track. When WWII broke out, Wayne Bennett '39, Jack Burnham '40 and Bob enlisted in the Navy the next week. He served in the South Pacific as a Naval Aviation Ordinance man. Following graduation from the University of Montana he was commissioned an officer and he retired in the mid 60s. Bob operated Lighthouse Realty for a number of years and was in business with his mother, the late Elmarie H. Dyke '15 before retiring to Puyallup, WA, where he succumbed at home. He is survived by his wife Virginia, three sons, Elgin of PA, John of South San Francisco, and Robert Vincent of Houston, TX; a daughter, Margaret Carey of Phoenix, AZ, and his older brother, Bill of Pebble Beach, CA.
