The News-Journal, Thursday, October 8, 1953

"Funeral services for John Dickens, 74, were held Saturday, October 3, at 11 a.m. at the Cave Springs Baptist Church, Clinton County. Burial was in the church's cemetery. Rev. D. A. Payton and Rev. W. R. Simmone were in charge of the services.

Dickens was born January 28, 1878 in Clinton County near Cave Springs, and died at the Rosary Hospital here Thursday, October 1, 1953, at 7:45 a.m. He suffered a severe stroke on Sunday, September 28, and was moved to the local hospital on Wednesday, September 30. He was taken ill at his residence in South Campbellsville.

He was the son of the late Ab Dickens and Elizabeth Jones Dickens of Clinton County. His wife, Mrs. Annie Eliza Reeder Dickens, survives.

He was a member of the Lands Chapel Methodist Church in Clinton County. Besides his wife, he is survived by seven children, Ivey Dickens, Knoxville, Tenn.; Mrs. Verlie Ross, Russell County; Mrs. Mary Canada, Route 1, Campbellsville and Willie Dickens, also of Route 1, Campbellsville; Mrs. Hattie Bryant, Campbellsville; Mrs. Mattie Brown, New Castle, Ind.; and Burnell Dickens, Campbellsville. One brother, Aby Dickens of Campbellsville, also survives as well as one half-sister, Mrs. Ida Young of Tennessee, and 30 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. His grandsons were pallbearers."
