Attorney "Joe" Odom was portrayed as the love interest of Nancy Hillis based "Mandy" in the NY Times Bestseller "Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil". Joe died of complications of AIDS in the Hamilton-Turner House at 330 Abercorn Street in Savannah, GA on November 2, 1991. In real life, there was no romance with Hillis. Clint Eastwood's movie portrayed Hillis' character as being in love with the John Berendt character. Odom is one of the more memorable characters, though, in both the book and the film in spite of poetic license. Joe is buried in the town of Claxton, GA, where he grew up. 56 miles West of Savannah, GA, Claxton is famous for its fruitcakes. Enter Claxton on Hwy 280. Take a left turn at the Texaco Station and when you cross a bridge look for a sign to "Bull Creek Cemetery" on your left. Make this left turn and the road dead ends at the Bull Creek Church. The Odom family plot is immediately behind the church and inside a chain-link fence. (submitted by E. Norton).
