I will try my best to explain how much my beautiful old lady meant to me . No words can tell you how much i loved her and how great of dog she was. She simply was unique.

We got Sky when she was an 8 week old bundle of fluff, a long haired pedigree German Shepherd who brought such joy into my life, just 8 months earlier my son was stillborn at full term. I needed something to hold in my arms, of couse a dog can never replace a baby, but my how she helped to heal my pain. I used to hold her in my arms and rock her and sing "You are my sunshine " to her. She so loved to be pampered. She was absolutely brilliant with children, fantastic to my 4 year old son and my 2 year old daughter, and later my autistic daughter , we even had other children from the estate knocking on the door so they could go and play in the back garden with her.

Sky loved her daily walks up the fields, i remember her first walk, i let her off of her lead and expected her to just start running and playing, but no, she sat down faithfully beside me, and that was the way she always was til the day she died. Sky never left my side. She was so cute when i took my children and their friends with us on her walks, she would round them all up and make sure they never wandered off, she was so maternal to them all.

At night before i went to bed i would always go and check on my children, Sky always came too and gently nosed them to make sure they was o.k, and in the mornings she would wake them up with kisses.

Sky accepted all the animals that i adopted over the years, she just took them all in her stride and loved them all, even letting the pet rats run over her back :)

Sky was so intelligent, i remember everytime i said to my hubby i am taking Sky for a walk she would get all excited, so i started spelling the words instead, blow me within a couple of days she had worked that out too . If she wanted a snack she would sit in front of me, lick her lips and turn her head into the kitchen, she would have made a good Lassie :) Near the end we had to bring her water and food bowl to her, she would bow her head and show us exactly where to place it :) She was brilliant, truly exceptional.

As with most German Shepherds her back legs started to fail her when she was about 10 years old, we still went for walks, but not so far, if we did go too far she would start dragging her back legs. Christmas 2006 Sky had a stroke, we thought we was going to lose her then, but she pulled through. By the time Sky was 13 she had lost the use of her back legs altogether. I use to use an old pair of trousers as a strap and hold her back end up, she still had her dignity and was as clean as a pin and would let me know when she wanted to go to the toilet. I use to take her out 4 times aday to do her business, just up the street and back again was far enough. Sky always came to bed with me, and so every night even with her back legs paralysed, she would come upstairs to bed. It was like a wheelbarrow race, she would hold her front end up and i would carry her back end, and that is how we got up the stairs. In the morning , coming down, well that was different again, she would slide herself down the stairs with me holding her collar sitting in front of her so she wouldn't fall. We was so in touch with each other , always knowing what the other was thinking. And always trusting one another .

By Christmas 2007 things were bad, she could barely turn herself, yet alone stand, and she was incontinent, she didn't even know she was peeing herself anymore until she had done it, then she would start trying to clean herself up. It was so sad to watch. I would wash her every time , tell her it was o.k , but you could tell she wasn't happy .

On January 22nd i made the hard decision to have my old lady put to sleep, the vet came out to the house and gave Sky a sedative , Sky was scared and shaking and it broke my heart, but the sedative calmed her and she dozed off snoring. Then the vet put the injection in her front paw and she passed away with me lying beside her, holding her and singing " You are my sunshine. "

We had Sky cremated and have her ashes back home with us.

Sky i love and miss you so much, but i know you are running in Heaven with Sean now , God bless xxx

Special thanks to Karen for sponsoring my Sky, means a lot to me x
