Birth: Sep. 14, 1894
Cherokee County
Texas, USA
Death: May 8, 1979
Brazoria County
Texas, USA

Drew Wilkins Thomas was the youngest child of William Alexander "Bill" Thomas and Mary Jane "Molly" McCain. He was born while the family was living on the Frank Gullage farm at Old Palestine near Alto, Texas in Cherokee County. When Drew was about 11 months old his mother died. Very shortly Mr. Thomas moved the family back to Carroll County, Mississippi, where they had previously lived.

It appears, from the census records, that Mr. Thomas might have remarried about 1897. In 1900 the family was still living in Carroll County and the mother of Molly McCain, Mrs. Martha McCain, was part of the Thomas household. Although Drew is not listed in that census, he would only have been about 6 years old, so he probably had not left home yet. It is believed that Grandmother McCain was with the family to care for Drew. The family remembers that Drew was very attached to Grandmother McCain and very distressed when her brother came from Oklahoma to take her home with him.

Whatever became of Mr. Thomas' second marriage, about 1903 Mr. Thomas married Sallie "Rosa" Goss. In 1910, W. A. Thomas, his wife Rosa, and sons George, Ben and Drew were counted in Carroll County.

At some point, the Thomas family traveled to Texas again. When Drew registered for the World War I Draft in 1917-1918, he was living in Houston County, Texas. Family history recalls that W. A. Thomas and "Aunt Rosie" as the children called her, lived at Ramon Town near Weches. In 1920 Drew, age 21, was living with his father and Rosa, still in Houston County.

On October 15, 1920, Drew Thomas married Cordelia Beatrice Gardner, the daughter of Miles S. Gardner and Rachel Burkett. Drew and Cordelia tried farming, but they couldn't make it. So, sometime before 1930, they moved to Angelton in Brazoria County and Drew went to work at the Clemens Prison Farm near Rosharon. He worked there as a prison guard for close to 50 years.

Drew never learned to drive. He rode a horse at the prison farm as a guard. He lived at the prison farm and rode a bus back and forth on his days off to Angleton where Cordelia and his children lived.

Drew and Cordelia had six children:
Arthur E. Thomas born in 1922, died in 1965
Emma Duie Thomas born in 1924, died in 1989
Odessa Lee Thomas born in 1926, died in 2002
Ira Jerril Thomas born in 1930, died in 1962
Jessie Beatrice Thomas born in 1934, died in 1992
Drew Henry Thomas born in 1937, died in 1981

Cordelia died in 1976. Drew died in 1979, at the age of 84, as a result of injuries received when he was hit by a car while crossing the highway. Drew is remembered and loved all who knew him.
