Enlisted in Company E of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, at Adrian, Michigan, for 3 years, at age 21. Killed in action (gun-shot) at Malvern Hill, Virginia, on July 1, 1862.

Military Pension application (mother's) file indicate that Alford / Alfred H. Dolph's mother was Electa M.(Lewis) Dolph and his father was Obed N. Dolph, who died in 1856, in Buffalo, New York. They were married in 1833, in New York. Adolph also had a brother named Joseph M. Dolph, who lived in Scipio Township, Michigan.
