Ernest Melvin Arthurs was born on February 16, 1909, in Texas, his father, Ora, was 29 and his mother, Edith (Ona), was 27. He married Hazel Irene Morris on March 24, 1934, in Follett, Texas. Jick was stationed in the Pacific Theatre for most of 1945. Jick and Hazel had four children, Joyce, Laura, Ryland, and Bill. By 1948, they were living in Liberal, Kansas where he worked as a plumber. He loved to make children's furniture for his family. He also loved to grow Moon Flowers, Morning Glories, and radishes. He died on August 8, 1963, in Shattuck, Oklahoma, at the age of 54, and was buried in Follett, Texas.
