Jane K. Shelburne was the daughter of John Pamplin Shelburne and Nancy L. Dunkin. She was born January 12, 1816 in Williamson County, Tennessee. At the time of the 1830 census, her family was living in Lauderdale County, Alabama. In 1836, her father, John P. Shelburne led a migration of several families from Lauderdale County, Alabama to Austin County, Texas. They stopped for one growing season in Sabine Parish, Louisiana.
Jane K. Shelburne and Alfred Minton were married about 1838, possibly in Austin County, Texas. On September 30, 1939, Alfred bought 435 ½ acres belonging to the estate of Stephen F. Austin. This is recorded in Austin County Deed Record Book Vol. B, page 333.
In 1842, her husband, Alfred Minton, and her father, John P. Shelburne, went to San Antonio to aid the Republic of Texas Troops in repelling Mexican Gen. Woll's forces from the city. They were paid $15.75 for the service by the state of Texas in 1853.
Alfred and Jane Minton are listed on the 1850 census with Robert, Samuel, Merica and Virginia. They are listed following the families of Jane's father , John Pamplin Shelburne and 2 brothers, William and Samuel Shelburne.
On September 8, 1851, Alfred and Jane K. Minton sold 211 ½ acres of land to John P. Shelburne (Austin County Deed Book d/E, page 451-452, No. 370). This was a portion of the land Alfred purchased in 1839.
Alfred died intestate on October 26, 1852 in Austin County, Texas at the age of 43.
In December 1852, Jane K Minton's father, John Pamplin Shelburne, was appointed administrator of the estate at her request (Austin County Succession Book F, p. 385).
Jane K. Minton is found on the 1860 census living in Pecan Grove in Austin County, Texas with her children Samuel Andrew, Nancy America, Virginia Ann, and John S. Minton.
In 1867, John P. Shelburne deeded land to his daughter Jane K. Shelburne as recorded in Austin County Deed Book Vol. M. pages 378-379.
On the 1870 census, she is listed as head of the household living with her step son Robert as the farm manager, Virginia, John and her father John Shelburne.
Jane K. Minton died April 6, 1874. The tombstone appears to be 1874 when examined in person. "Shelburne: Book of Samuel" lists her death date as 1874. "Cemeteries of Austin County" lists the death date as 1894. This is probably a misprint or misreading of the tombstone.
She is buried in the John Pamplin Shelburne Cemetery. This cemetery is located 1 mile southwest of Bleiblerville on Begonia Lane.
