Retired Sgt. 1st Class Charles Sidney Christian Sr., 87, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at the Hunters Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center, Richmond, Va.

He was born Jan. 17, 1926, and was a native of Winchester, Va. He was the eldest of six brothers and three sisters. He received his primary education in the Winchester Public School System and thereafter entered the United States Navy for three years. He possessed a genuine desire to serve and protect his country, and then became a member of the United States Army, where he retired in 1969, after 20-plus years of dedicated service. After retirement from the United States Army, he began employment with the Womack Hospital, Fayetteville, N.C., where he also later retired. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nannie L. Dodson Christian; a daughter, Deborah C. Doby; and a grandson, Stephen Lawrence Christian.

He leaves to cherish his memories, four daughters, Juanita C. Gayle, Charlotte A. Christian and Gwendolyn C. Johnson (Jeffrey), all of Petersburg, and Janice Johnson of Ettrick; two sons, Charles S. Christian Jr. and Donald L. Christian Sr. (Katie), all of Petersburg; 20 grandchildren, four devoted, Lawrence and Lashaunde Smith, Candace Johnson and Lakeida Coleman Johnson; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Fitzhuga C. Brown of Washington, D.C.; four sisters-in-law, LA Parker and Bettie Dodson, both of Ettrick, Vivian Christian of Albany, N.Y., and Lucy Christian of Texas; two brothers, George Christian Jr. of Oxnard, Calif., and Beverly Christian of Upper Marlboro, Md.; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, to include devoted caretakers, Diane Wynn, Jackie Lewis and Michelle Liggette, and special friends of the family whom assisted in caretaking, Ivan and Evelyn Johnson.

The family will like to give a special note of thanks to the staff of the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center, Family Care Home Health Care, Colonial Heights, and the Emporia Branch of the Veterans Home Care Agency.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at the First Baptist Church, Harrison Street, Petersburg, with the pastor, the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Tillman, officiating. Burial will commence at the Dinwiddie Memorial Park. The family will assemble at 1 p.m. on the day of the service at the residence of his daughter, Gwendolyn Johnson (Jeffrey), 605 Hoke Drive, Petersburg, Va.
