BROTHER ADRIAN POWERS, F.S.C., 91, superintendent and director of Christian Brothers High School from 1965 until his retirement in 1987, died Monday, September 29, 2008 after a brief illness at the Brothers' residence at CBHS. Bartholomew Powers (the baptismal name of Br. Adrian Powers, F.S.C.) was born in Ossian, Iowa on April 1, 1917. His dad Edward died when Bart was a year old and his mom, Bertha Hangartner Powers, raised the six children. He was schooled in Ossian by the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Family at St. Francis DeSales Church, Grade and High School and graduated in 1935. After working for the Civil Conservation Corps in the rural areas of Iowa, he entered the postulancy of the Brothers at LaSalle Institute in Glencoe, Missouri and on August 30, 1939 he received the habit of the Brothers and the name "Brother Herbert Adrian." Following the novitiate year in Glencoe, Br. Adrian completed his bachelor's degree at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota. His first teaching assignment was at St. George High School in Evanston, Illinois. After seven years he was transferred to LaSalle Institute in Glencoe to be the Director General of the Motherhouse and the farm. At LaSalle, Br. Adrian was the leader of a community of retired Brothers, director of the farm, overseer of the needs ofthe Junior Novitiate and the Novitiate and the community of sisters. Br. Adrian's third assignment was to St. Patrick High School in Chicago where he was principal and eventually made head of the school and director of the community of 40 Brothers. In 1964 Br. Lambert Thomas appointed Br. Adrian to come to Memphis and make the move of the high school from the Parkway campus to Walnut Grove. Arriving in January of 1965, he taught, oversaw the final phases of construction, ordered equipment, and each Sunday walked the seven miles to the campus with Br. Leander Joseph and Br. J. Stephen who would become his assistants at the new campus. When the new campus on Walnut Grove opened for the 1965-66 school year, Br. Adrian faced a million-plus dollar debt, a campus with no landscaping, playing fields, or paved parking lot, no traffic light at the entrance, an auditorium with no seats or curtain and many challenges. The school enrollment began its steady climb from 600 to 900. For the next 22 years, Br. Adrian chipped away at the school debt, furnished the buildings, paved the parking lot, and established the endowment for tuition assistance for families in need. He established the Hall of Fame and built the first addition to the campus, the physical education complex, followed by Heffernan Hall in 1985 and the re-furbishing of the courtyard. When he retired in 1987 at age of 70, the school was debt-free, in excellent condition and the endowment for tuition assistance and capital improvements was well-established and a Board of Directors mandated by the Brothers' Institute for all its schools was securely in place. Br. Adrian was honored by the presence of many family, friends, colleagues, and former students, including his niece, Ramona Drilling from Ossian on April 1, 2007 for his 90th birthday celebration. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 5, from 6-8 p.m. at the Brothers' Chapel at CBHS. The funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father John McArthur on Monday, October 6, 1:30 p.m. at St. Louis Church. Burial will be at the Brothers' plot in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Brother Adrian Powers Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Christian Brothers High School, 5900 Walnut Grove Road, Memphis, TN 38120.
