Rosa Lee, Dorothea (Stelter) Eissler "Beach Grandma", 80, died in San Antonio Monday, April 12 of amytrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
She was born to share croppers in Brenham on June 7, 1923, the third child of Emma and Fritz Stelter.
As a young girl, she worked long hours in the cotton fields, picking cotton by hand with her two brothers and sister. As a teenager, Rosa Lee moved to Rosenberg to attend high school and live with her Aunt Hulda Kelm's family. After graduation from Rosenberg High School, she attended Blinn Junior College in Brenham before moving to Springfield, Missouri, to train as a Western Union Telegraph Operator, a career much in demand because of World War II. Her first assignment was the Western Union office in Huntsville, Texas. She was later assigned to Beeville, where she worked and managed the office for 17 years, until the office was closed in 1965. After she retired from the Western Union office, she worked in the family business until her death.
She married Raymond Eissler on June 13, 1949, in Nordheim. With her husband, she owned and operated Blueberry Hills Subdivision. Her husband preceded her in death on August 23, 1991.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Linda (Eissler) and Ron Unger and two granddaughters, Leia and Nina Unger, of Dallas; a sister and brother, Elfrieda Lueck and Delbert Stelter of Brenham; a goddaughter, Peggy (Kubenka) Weiss of San Antonio, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rosa Lee was a lifelong member of the Faith Lutheran Church of Beeville. Memorials may be made to the Faith Lutheran Church flower fund or the charity of your choice.
A memorial service was held Friday, April 16 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Beeville. A graveside service was also held Friday in Brenham at the Prairie Lea Cemetery.
