He was a Confederate Soldier and died in the Battle of Five Forks near Petersburg, VA.

He enlisted as a Private on June 4, 1861 at Callands, VA and served in Company B, 38th Virginia Infantry. He was captured on July 4, 1863 during the Battle of Gettysberg, PA, sent to Fort McHenry on July 6, 1863 and to Fort Delaware on July 7, 1863 to Point Lookout on October 26, 1863. He was exchanged there on February 21, 1865.

He was promoted to Staff Sergeant and was at Camp Lee on March 3, 1865. He was Killed in Action during the Battle of Five Forks on April 1, 1865.
