Grindal (Grindall) Reynolds was born about 1764, the 5th of 6 children (4th son) born of Grindall Reynolds (b. 1726), who moved from Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island and settled in Putney, Cumberland County, the New Hampshire Grants (now Windham County, Vermont) about 1755 or 1760.
Grindal (1764-1843), at the age of 16 years, served in Captain Josiah Fish's (9th) Company, Colonel Samuel Fletcher's Vermont Infantry Regiment ordered organized and into service by the Vermont Board of War, January 9, 1781, for the 1781 campaign to continue in service until December 15, 1781 unless sooner discharged. Grindal enlisted August 2, 1781 and was discharged November 25, 1781 with 114 days service.
About 1788, Grindal and his younger brother Constant moved across the Green Mountains from Putney to the Lake Champlain Islands. Grindal married, about 1789 at South Hero, Chittenden (now Grand Isle) County, Vermont, Dorcas Landon (1774-1811) by whom he had 10 children (4 sons and 6 daughters): Permelia (Amelia) (b. 1791), Jesse (1793-1817), Sally (1795-1867), Guy B. (1797-1883), Amanda (1799-1881), Henry Hardy (1801-1871), Julia (1803-1843), Elizabeth (Betsey) (1805-1861), John (1807-1887), and William V. (1809-1877). Grindal married, 2nd, Ann Butler (1777-1861).
Grindal Reynolds served the Town of Middle Hero (now Grand Isle) as Selectman, 1802-1803.
