Leon McMannis, 74, passed away at 9:37 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Pettett Funeral Home, with Rick Sutton officiating, with burial at Murdale Gardens of Memory. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and until 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Murphysboro Food Pantry or First Christian Church in Murphysboro.

Leon was born Nov. 1, 1935, in Grimsby to Walter McMannis and Ruby (Reames) McMannis. He retired as the processing supervisor for Curwood after working there for 40 years.

Mr. McMannis was a member of First Christian Church in Murphysboro, where he had served as a deacon.

Leon was known for his woodworking and his ability to look at something and be able to make it. He had been at the woodworking craft shows for 25 years. He loved to fish and to garden, but he especially loved his grandkids.

Leon married Charlotte Penrod on June 8, 1956, in Grand Tower, and she survives.

Other survivors include one daughter and two sons-in-law, Debbie and Tony Balsano of Cape Girardeau and Rick Falaster of Murphysboro; two grandchildren, Amanda Kiehne and her husband, Mark Kiehne, and Ryan Balsano and his wife, Alison, all of Cape Girardeau; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Floyd and Jean McMannis, and Eddie and Carol McMannis, all of Murphysboro, and Lyle and Sarah McMannis of Dupo; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Roberta and Floyd Norton, Mae and Joe Law, and Melba Easterly, all of Murphysboro; one sister-in-law and her husband, Janet and Roger Baltzell of Grand Tower; one brother-in-law and his wife, Byron and Virginia Penrod of Grand Tower; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Lisa Falaster on Nov. 21, 2008; one brother, Kenny McMannis; and his parents.
