"Rev. Daniel William McKoon, a native of Columbia, N.Y., was baptized by Rev. Wm. Hunt when eighteen year of age. He was licensed to preach in 1838 and ordained Feb. 9, 1840 (in Free Baptist Church). He commenced immediately a six-years' pastorate with the Newport and Poland church, sixty being added to the church by baptism and lasting good resulted. In 1847 he was prostrated by disease, which so affected the mind that on recovery he found it necessary to study the alphabet again and regain his former knowledge step by step. After this, twenty years of usefulness remained to him, which were spent in the Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Quarterly Meetings, his last pastorate being with the Ashford church. he died at Orlean Jan. 4, 1871, aged 59 years.
Brother McKoon was a warm-hearted Christian, earnest in every good work and faithful to duty. As a preacher he was systematic and pathetic. In his early ministry he rendered efficient service in securing friends and funds for Whitestown Seminary at a time when both were needed. He represented the Central N.Y. Yearly Meeting in the General Conference of 1844. His son, Newton C. McKoon of Ellicottsville, N.Y., has been for many years clerk of the Cattaraugus Q.M., and is commisioner of schools for Cattaraugus County."
