Son of William B. and Mercy A. (Hoag) Hopkins, and married Dora J. Murphy on June 7, 1888 in Henry County, Illinois.

"Rev. George Bentley Hopkins graduated from Pike Seminary in 1879, and from Hillsdale College [Mich] in 1884, and completed the theological course in Bates College [Maine] in 1887. He received license to preach from the Genesee (NY) Quarterly Meeting in Jan. 1886, supplied the West Falmouth church, ME, one year while in school, and settled as pastor at Cowlesville, N.Y., Oct. 1, 1887, where he received ordination the January following..."
