Leona M Rooks Boerman
Birth: Nov. 5, 1902
Ottawa County
Michigan, USA
Death: Feb. 23, 2002
Morro Bay
San Luis Obispo County
California, USA

Ben and Leona were united in marriage on May 20, 1928. They had three children: Constance Yvette, Gary Lee and Benadene Leone.

My grandmother was a great lady. She was a single mother and raised three children on her own. She was widowed at a young age when her husband and my grandfather, Benjamin Boerman, died of peritonitis due to a ruptured appendix.

When grandma was a teenager, she worked as an usherette in a movie theater in San Francisco, Ca. I believe the theater was on Market or Mission st.

According to the 1920 U.S. Census, grandma was living with her uncle John Vanderlinde and her cousin Helene Vanderlinde at 55 W. Seventeenth St., Holland township, Ottawa Co., Michigan. I am not sure if she was actually living there or maybe had just come for a visit. Her cousin, Helene, was her favorite cousin and Grandma would often talk about her with fond memories.

1930 Census lists Grandpa and Grandma living at 1335 Vermont Ave, Los Angeles, Ca. By 1932 they had moved to 336 Fort Washington Ave, New York, New York. Their apartment there was in the Washington Heights section of New York and their apartment overlooked the Hudson River. The apartment building still exists today. By 1934 or 1935 they were living in Newaygo Co., Michigan and by 1935 or 1936 they had moved to Miami, Florida. By 1937 they were again living in California at 331 W. Marigold St., Altadena, Ca.

On April 25th, 1930 Grandma and Grandpa sailed on the SS Governor Cobb from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida. They were just newly married for almost two years and had not had their children yet. At this point in history Americans could travel to Cuba. It must have been a lovely trip.

On November 9th, 1933 Grandma and Grandpa had their first child, a girl they named Constance Yvette. On August 13th, 1935, they had their second child, a boy they named Gary Lee. On February 10th, 1938 they had their third child, a girl they named Benadene Leone. At the time of Benadene's birth, Grandma was living at 1455 Clay St., Redlands, Ca. Grandpa had passed away in September of 1937, about 5 1/2 months before Benadene was born.

By 1942, about 4-5 years after Grandpa died, Grandma and her three young children were living at 401 W. Marigold St., Altadena, Ca. having moved just a few houses down the street from 331 W. Marigold St.

After Grandpa died, Grandma took a variety of jobs to support her young family. One of her earliest jobs was working at Saint Luke's Hospital (now Saint Luke's Medical Center) in Pasadena, Ca. Her last job that she held was executive secretary to the president of Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, Ca. She worked at that job for over 20 years and retired from Cal Poly.

Grandma loved to travel and went to Europe several times. She also took a trip to Africa and went on a canoe ride down one of the rivers there.

I will always remember Grandma for her graciousness and her love for her family. Also, for her wonderful blue eyes that could stop you in your tracks if you did something wrong. My siblings and cousins know exactly what I am talking about!! Lol :).

Grandma loved to go dancing and was very good at waltzing. Her favorite song to waltz to was the "Tennessee Waltz".

She was a wonderful lady and her family loves and misses her so much.

See you again in GLORY, Grandma! XOXOXO!!!
