Hannibal Hamlin

15th United States Vice-President, VP during the Civil War, US Congressman, US Senator, 25th Maine Governor. Represented Maine's 6th District in the House of Representatives, serving from 1845 to 1847. Elected as a Senator from Maine to the United States Senate on three different occasions, serving from 1848 to 1857, then from 1857 to 1861, and finally from 1869 to 1881. Served as Governor of Maine in 1857, but resigned to take his seat in the US Senate for his second term. Elected as the 15th US Vice-President in the cabinet of Abraham Lincoln, and served through the first three years of the Civil War in that office. When President Lincoln ran for a second term , he was passed over for re-election in favor of Tennesseean Andrew Johnson. While in office, Vice-President Hamlin served a 60-Day enlistment in the Maine Home Guard as a Private. Served as US Minister to Spain from 1881 to 1882. One son, Cyrus Hamlin, became a Brigadier General in the Union Army, and the other, Charles Hamlin, was a Brevet Brigadier General. All three Hamlins are interred in the family plot. (bio by: Russ)
