He was a graduate of Richmond College, of which his father was president, earing an A.B. in 1855 and an A.M. in 1858.
During the Civil War he served as a Chaplain in Co. S, 13th. Virginia Infantry and surrendered at Appamattox Court House with the Army of Northern Virginia.
He held pastorates in Frederick County, Virginia, Winchester, Virginia, Logan County, Kentucky, and Lexington, Kentucky.
He was president of Lexington Female College 1877-1880 and of Bethel College 1889-1898 where he also was professor of natural science and chairman of the faculty.
