Galen N. Buckwalter, 77, of Northfield at Menno Haven in Chambersburg passed away at 12:45 PM, Saturday, February 21, 2009 in the nursing home at Menno Haven, where he had been a guest since December.

Born September 24, 1931 in Atglen, PA, he was a son of the late Park Leroy and Melinda Smoker Buckwalter.

Early in his life he worked at his family's dairy prior to entering college. Galen received his BA from Eastern Mennonite College in Harrisonburg, VA and a Master's degree in Education from Arizona State University. He taught school in Arizona for 18 years prior to moving to Franklin County where he and his wife Gladys owned and operated Lehman's Egg Service until retiring.

He was a faithful member of Marion Mennonite Church where he was involved in many aspects of church life. He enjoyed volunteering at Menno Haven where he was a member of the Board of Directors for 16 years, serving as Chairman for a number of years. He was a former member and past Chairman of the Board of Directors at Cedar Ridge Ministries in Williamsport, MD and was an active member of the Greencastle Exchange Club, the American Egg Board, and numerous other professional and community organizations.

Galen is survived by his loving wife, Gladys Lehman Buckwalter, whom he married June 5, 1956; a son, Gregg A. Buckwalter and wife Wendy; three grandchildren, Katie, David, and Lauren Buckwalter, all of Greencastle; and two sisters, Rhoda Umble of St. Paul, MN and Lila Hess of Rocky Mount, VA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Blanche Umble; and four brothers, John, Nathan, Nevin, and Park Buckwalter, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, February 28, 2009 at Marion Mennonite Church. Pastor Carl Kniss will officiate. Private interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
