Lieutenant Gordon was a 15 year veteran of the Norwich, CT Police Department when he fought with an escaping prisoner in the cell block beneath Norwich City Hall. During the struggle the prisoner, Michael "Mickey Miner" Minnehan picked up a cuspidor and struck Gordon in the head. Gordon died 4 months later of what the entry in the death records of the city read "Softening of the Brain" but was no doubt a severe and eventually fatal concussion.
Minnehan was later caught in Trenton, New Jersey and returned to Norwich where he was tried and convicted in the crime.
