TAFTVILLE - Retired Police Lt. Donald E. Cote, husband of Cecile (Lavoie)
Cote, of 24 North 2nd Ave. Taftville, passed away late Sunday afternoon at
W.W. Backus Hospital.
He was born in Baltic January 12, 1933 the son of the late Alfred and Marie
Rose (Daigneault) Cote.
A longtime resident of the Taftville area, Mr. Cote was a veteran of the
Korean War, serving first in the U.S. Navy before entering the U.S. Army
December 8, 1953, and was honorably discharged November 26, 1955 with the
rank of SP3.
Mr. Cote joined the Norwich Police Department in 1958 as a supernumerary and
became a full time officer the following year. In 1966 he was appointed to
the detective bureau. In 1970 Mr. Cote was promoted to Sergeant, then in
1972 promoted to Lieutenant in charge of the detective division. During his
career he served under 5 police chiefs, received numerous commendations and
completed dozens of police training courses. Retired Police Lt. Bruce
Bissonette said Cote was a master interrogator who could see through someone
lying. "He was able to talk to people and communicate on their level," said
Bissonette. "He knew how to interrogate people." He retired in 1984 after 26
and a half years of service. Mr. Cote then worked for Norwich Savings
Society as a courier for 10 years, retiring in 1998.
On January 7, 1956 in Auburn, ME he was united in marriage to the former
Cecile Lavoie who survives him.
Mr. Cote was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Taftville, a member of
the Ponemah Council #34 Knights of Columbus and the Hormidas C. Belec 4th
Degree Assembly both of Taftville and served as Grand Knight in 1967, a
member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #594 of Norwich, the Norwich
Lodge of Elks BPOE #430, the Patrolman Benevolent Association, the New
London County Detective Association and the Police Association of
Connecticut, and he had been a member of the Charter Revision Committee for
the City of Norwich.
Besides his wife, Mr. Cote is survived by 3 sons Dan J. Cote and his wife
Sharon, Roy R. Cote and his wife Lona, and Paul R. Cote all of Taftville; 2
daughters Nancy A. Miclette and her husband Charles of Taftville, Joanne M.
Schlough and her husband Gregory of Norwich; 2 brothers Deacon Albert Cote
of Bozrah and Normand Cote of Batesville, MS; 3 sisters Leonie Poudrier and
Jeannette Gadbois both of Senatobia, MS, and Aline Banta of Griswold; 6
grandchildren Crystal Miclette, Kerry Merchant, Jennifer and Danielle
Schlough, and Christopher and Timothy Cote; 1 great-granddaughter Kalli
Lavoie, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Robert D.
Cote and a sister Laurea Cote.
All are invited to assemble at Sacred Heart Church Taftville Thursday at
10:00 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial. Entombment to follow in St.
Mary's Mausoleum Norwich. Calling hours are Wednesday 4-8 p.m. In lieu of
flowers contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Building Fund P.O. Box
