Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Glen Charles Craig, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 93 on Tuesday July 17th, 2012. Glen was born on October 4th, 1918 and was raised in Salt Lake City. He was the oldest of five children born to Charles and Amelia Hadfield Craig.
Glen graduated from Granite High in 1935, and continued his education at the University of Utah where he earned a degree in Economics in 1940. He was also a talented artist and earned money painting business signs and advertisements around Salt Lake City to help pay for his schooling. Glen was heavily involved in extra curricular activities such as the U of U Dance Committee, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and worked as the art editor for "The Pen."
Glen met his future bride, Elline Midgley at a fraternity dance. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on November 6, 1941. In 1941 Glen was drafted into the US Army and served overseas in the European theatre in France and Germany, and also in the Pacific theatre in Okinawa. After the war ended he continued his military career in the Army Reserve, retiring in 1978 with the rank of Lt Colonel.
Glen's professional career included more than 20 years with Texaco Corporation starting out as a fuel truck driver and rising through the ranks to become the District Manager. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Utah Bank and Trust. He later became Regional Operations Manager for USA Petroleum Corporation for more than 10 years. As an entrepreneur, Glen successfully invented, marketed, manufactured, and sold oil can openers and related products used in gasoline outlets all across the world.
Glen and Elline established a home in Bountiful in 1946 where they raised their four children and have been blessed with long and happy lives together. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Many people loved and admired Glen. He was a wonderful example of being Christ-like in so many ways, and loved his family and friends unconditionally. He wasn't a man of many words, but when he did speak it was always done with such humor and wit. His actions always spoke louder than anything else. Glen will be remembered by his loved ones as a kind and gentle man, a man of great generosity, and someone who was always concerned about the feelings and needs of others.
Glen had many talents and hobbies, including furniture making, painting, golf, travel, and spending time with his family. Glen enjoyed serving as a temple worker at the Bountiful Temple for several years.
Glen is survived by his wife Elline, his children: Caroline Craig of Olympia WA, Allan Craig (Terry) of Layton, Marianne Michaels (Roger) of Mapleton, Rushby Craig (Cay) of Centerville, 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and his brother Stuart Craig of Salt Lake City.
Services in memory of Glen will be held at the Bountiful Utah North Stake Center, 1540 N. 400 E., Bountiful Utah. A gathering will be held Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 10:00 AM for friends and family, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM.
