James Joseph Burkhardt, age 82, of Mannington passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 26, 2006. Born in Milwaukee, WI, he was the son of the late John William and Rose Mary (Popp) Burkhardt.
James attended Parochial school in Milwaukee and graduated from Penns Grove High School in 1941. He was drafted into the Army in 1943 and was assigned to Company K, 311th Infantry Regiment of New Jersey's 78th Division at Camp Pickett, VA. During his time of service to his country, he was deployed to Aachen, Germany and after the war, he was also stationed in the Kassel area of Germany. Upon his discharge, his highest rank was Staff Sergeant.
In 1937 the DuPont Company purchased his father's business and his family moved to the Deepwater area of Salem County. He began his employment with DuPont in 1946 in the Freon Lab. He spent 22 years in Chambers Works, transferred to DuPont in Wilmington, DE where he spent three years in Food Freezent and eight years in Halon 1301 Fire Suppresent. He retired in 1980.
During his employment with DuPont, he met and married his wife Mary Frances (Shimp) where she was also a Lab Tech. in Freon. From 1980 until 1993 they shared their time living in Mannington during the warmer months and lived the colder months in Jamaica West Mobile Home Park, Fort Myers, FL. In 1997 both James and his wife joined the Friends of the Hancock House and he was still a member until the time of his death.
He is survived by one brother Richard Albert and his wife Dorothy Burkhardt of New Port Richey, FL, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years Mary Frances (Shimp) Burkhardt (2005).
James will be laid to rest with full military honors in Salem County Veterans Cemetery, Pilesgrove.
