United States Army Officer. The son of Kentucky Senator Henry Clay, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in in June 1831, but resigned his commission only months later in November of that year. He became a lawyer in Kentucky, and served in the Kentucky State Legislature from 1835 to 1837. Upon the outbreak of the Mexican War, he was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Kentucky Volunteer Infantry regiment, and was killed in action at the head of his troops by Mexican lancers at the February 1847 Battle of Buena Vista. First interred in Mexico, his remains were brought back to Kentucky, where they lie with other casualties of the battle around the Kentucky War Memorial in Frankfort Cemetery. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
