Birth: Mar. 17, 1804
Leicestershire, England
Death: Apr. 15, 1871
Orange County
Indiana, USA

Son of Hugh Stackhouse and Mary Berrington.

An article about daughter Martha in Ames Chapel Methodist, 1879-1979 reported "Her father was born in England, in the town of Liester, March 3, 1804, and came to America as a young child. He was christened July 6, 1813 in the Methodist Church at Orangeville. He died April 15, 1871, and is buried in a private cemetery on Carl Gromer's farm at Orangeville. He married Mourning Dalton on February 14, 1854. She was born in the year of 1831 and died in the year of 1897." Family stories say that he came from England to America in an open sailboat, but this is very unlikely.

Married to Sarah Row on January 2, 1842 in Orange County, IN.

Married to Mourning Dalton on February 14, 1854 in Orange County, IN.

Some researchers believe that this stone is for Hugh's father, also named Hugh. The Lost River DAR transcription seemed to share this belief. Their transcription of Higgins cemetery from August 12, 1937 shows "Stackhouse, Hugh b. Leicester, England 179? d. about 1870. His wife Jenkins, d. several years prior to Hugh. Graves had markers". However, James E. Lane visited the cemetery in 1988 and found the grave stone. He thought the death date was April 15, 1871 (the last two digits of the year were nearly illegible, so he was not 100% certain) and his age was 67 Yrs. 28 Ds. (days could have been 26, the stone was badly deteriorated). This information fits Hugh (the son), not Hugh (the father). Also, the article on Martha Stackhouse in Ames Chapel Methodist, 1879-1979 states that Hugh (the son) was buried in a private cemetery on Carl Gromer's farm at Orangeville, which is the Higgins Cemetery. Therefore, this is likely the grave of Hugh (the son), and the DAR reference to wife Jenkins probably was actually Sarah Rowe.
