TUSCALOOSA Madison S. "Bill" Blakney, age 91, of Tuscaloosa, died Feb. 7, 2011, at VA Medical Center Hospice. He waged his cancer battle with grace, dignity, and humor, finding the strength to take his daily walks-almost to the end-and giving all he met a smile. He passed away quietly in his sleep. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, at Dogwood Chapel, 200 5th St. NE in Aliceville with Rev. George Blakney officiating. Burial will follow in Magnolia Memorial Gardens with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. The family will receive friends immediately following service at Dogwood Chapel.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Osmond Blakney and Winston Blakney; and one sister, Mary Linder.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Winston Skelton Blakney; a son, James Alvin "Al" Blakney (Gail); daughters, Carolyn Skelton Achterof (Gary) and Joyce Skelton Hamilton (Bill); four grandchildren, Jessica Blakney Dawkins (John), Angie Achterhof, Jonathan Blakney, and Alan Hamilton; and two great-grandchildren, Joshua Blakney and Fitts Achterhof.
Bill was born Jan. 22, 1920, and was raised in the Sapps community of Pickens County, Ala. He was one of four children born to George Blakney and Mattie Shackelford Blakney. He served the U.S. Army bravely in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, during World War II. Bill was a retired employee of Huyck Felt Company and a member of Masonic Lodge #254 in Carrollton.
