In 1959, he was selected for Officers Candidate School and then commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. In 1966-67, Fred served in Vietnam as a captain in the First Radio Battalion. During this tour, he was awarded a Bronze Star with a "V" for valor for his heroic action of using his own body to protect one of his wounded Marines during an enemy artillery barrage.
In 1970, Fred retired from the Marine Corps as a major and began his second career with Heavy Machines, Inc. During this time, he was selected as one of fifty persons nationwide in the industry for the Fathers of Intermodal Award by the University of Denver. He retired from Heavy Machines in 2001.
He was a member of Lindenwood Christian Church for forty six years, where he served as a member of the church board, a life elder, and a longtime member of the Friendship Sunday School class.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mamie Dollar Boone and Leon Milan Boone, and his sister, Lois Boone Groome. He is survived by Katherine Williams Boone, his wife of almost sixty-three years, daughter Kathy Butts (Ray), son Jeff Boone, son Tim Boone, daughter Amy Murrey (Tom), five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Interment in the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Lindenwood Christian Church benevolent fund or Wounded Warriors Project.
