Mrs. Mary Jo Barron, 47, of 1852 Lyndale, secretary for Memphis Center City Commission, was found dead at her home at 11 a.m. yesterday by her son, Daniel Wayne Barron. She was 47.
Her father, Claude G. Christley, last night said Mrs. Barron was preparing for work yesterday morning when she apparently had a heart attack or stroke. Her son found her in the bathroom when he woke at 11 a.m.
"Danny said he talked to Mary Jo when he came in from work about midnight and then heard her getting ready for work and went back to bed. When he got up he found her on the bathroom floor," said Christley.
Mrs. Barron worked as a secretary for the old Downtown Association before it was renamed the City Center Commission.
William E. Shelton III said "What a terrible loss. A person who was so dedicated to her work and the Downtown Association (now the City Center Commission). A lovely lady and she will certainly be missed. " Shelton was executive directory of the Downtown Association when Mrs. Barron came to work for the organization in 1964.
She was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church.
She was born in Canton, IL and moved to Memphis with her parents in 1948.
She also leaves her mother, Mrs. Claude G. Christley of Memphis; a sister, Mrs. R.L. Wheaton of Memphis, and four brothers, Philip Allen Christley of Minneapolis, Paul G. Christley of Dallas, Lane Christley of Houston and Larry G. Cfristley of Memphis.
