George Ames Chaney, a self proclaimed dentist, jeweler, music and news-dealer.
Dr. George A. Chaney is listed in Beecher and Polk dental directories from 1884 to 1928 indicating he was practicing dentistry in Tappan, Ohio, at least this entire time, albeit not full time as his advertisements show (see below). No educational information is given, meaning he was either self taught or served a preceptorship under a practicing dentist.
"Doc" Chaney since he was not formally educated in dentistry did not have a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree but many practitioners of dentistry were "grandfathered" and allowed to continue practicing during the early years of dentistry's establishment as a profession.
Dr. Chaney married Annie Rose Marsh in 1882 and they had six children. Some researchers say five but the are most likely unaware of Herbert King Cheney who survived just over a month.
Mary Chaney 1882 – 1937
Olive Blanche Chaney 1884 – 1963
Wesley Earl Chaney 1886 –
Lloyd Emerson Chaney 1888 – 1963
Raymond Ernest Chaney 1891 – 1910
Herbert King Chaney 1905 – 1905
The photograph at right of George Chaney smoking a cigar and seated with his feet up on the table is a rare but not unknown example of advertising on the soles of ones shoes and posing this way for a picture. Written on the soles of his shoes in white are the words CHANEY on his right sole (our left) and DENTIST on his left sole. The word dentist is hard to make out.
On the address side of the postcard are two advertisements. On the left side: GEO. A. CHANEY, / DEALER IN / EDISON PHONOGRAPHS / RECORDS & SUPPLIES / TAPPAN OHIO. On the right side: GEO. A. CHANEY, / DENTIST, JEWLER, (sic) / MUSIC AND NEWS-DEALER. / I HAVE KEPT CONSTANTLY ON HAND A / COMPLETE STOCK OF WATCHES, / CLOCKS, JEWELRY, SPECTACLES, / EVERY THING PERTAINING TO THE / BUSINESS / TAPPAN, OHIO.
I have always loved the way the British celebrate eccentric people. George Ames Chaney by his photograph alone distinguishes himself as an American original and flamboyant in his own right. I only wish I had known him!
