Clarence Calvin Merritt, known as "Cal", was born in Andrew, Iowa, in 1876, resided in Nebraska, Kansas, and finally in Clinton, Iowa, where he worked as a carpenter. On June 1, 1910, he married Philena Pearl Eastman of Jackson County, Iowa. They had two children, a daughter, Gladys, who died in 1912, and one son, Kenneth, born October 27, 1913. Kenneth Merritt resided in Clinton, Iowa, where he worked as a U.S. postal employee. In 1945 Kenneth married Nancy Corrine Hendrix, a native of Newberry, South Carolina. They had four children: Robert T. Merritt, born 1946, died 2009; Calvin B. Merritt, born 1948; Charles H. Merritt, born 1950; and Nancy K. Merritt Bakhtier, born in 1955. The children are now scattered across the continent, with Charles H. Merritt and his family living in West Virginia, Nancy in Colorado, and Calvin in Pnnsylvania.
