A cadet at West Point Military Academy from July 1, 1833 until July 1, 1837, when he graduated and was promoted to Second Lieut., 2d. Dragoons. He served in the Florida War against the Seminole Indians (1837-39), and was made First Lieut. of the 2d. Dragoons on Dec. 1, 1838. He served on recruiting service from 1839 until 1840, when he was dismissed on Feb. 17, 1840 for habitual drunkenness. He then worked as a school teacher in Covington from 1840 until 1842.

William Hardia was a graduate of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1837. A summary career biography of him is given in entry #939 in Cullum's Biographical Register of the Graduates of the Military Academy; it is online.
