Birdie Estella Thrailkill was born to Charles Augustus "Gus" and Lettie G. Luke Thrailkill on 2 March 1881, in Fremont County, Iowa. Birdie was the first born of Gus and Lettie's nine children: 1. Birdie Estella, 2. Dora Alice, 3. Edgar Lee, 4. Ernest Albert, 5. Elizabeth J., 6. Charles Augustus Thrailkill, Jr., 7.Lonnie, 8. Roy Dee "Jesse", and 9. Carl Abram Thrailkill.
Birdie moved with her family before 1890 to a farm north of Pawnee in Harrison County, Missouri. They were affiliated with the Baptist Church. They lived in the neighborhood near the Reverend Andrew Jacob Grabill family.
Birdie married Samuel Washington Grabill on 27 March 1901 at Pawnee, Missouri. They began their married life on the John & Sallie Grabill homestead, belonging to Sam's parents, the late Andrew and Oregon Grabill. Birdie and Sam were blessed with seven children, six of those living to maturity: Opal Letitia Grabill [m. Vincent Kelly], Oregon Grabill [m. Verd Hobbs], Hazel Leota Grabill [m. Roy Evans], Mary Belle (died of spinal meningitis at age 1 yr, 1 week), Garland Samuel Grabill [m. Doris Helen Holloway], Margaret Leona Grabill [m. Claude Lark], and Leland Keith Grabill [m. Mildred Arkle].
In addition to raising the family, Birdie helped her husband with the farm, livestock, and garden; and took care of Sam's grandmother Sally Woodward, who was living with the family on the farm they'd bought from John Grabill's heirs. Birdie maintained many church affiliations: she was raised Baptist; she taught the Eagleville Methodist Young Adult's class in her later years; and had many connections with Eagleville Christian Church. (The latter two sent cards and flowers for her funeral). She was also a member of the K.M. Club, a ladies' club.
After the death of her husband Samuel in 1932, Birdie remained on the farm until 1941, when she purchased a home in the west part of Eagleville.
When her health failed, she disposed her home and moved to Bethany to spend time with her daughter Hazel and son-in-law Roy Evans. Later, she lived with her daughter Margie & son-in Law Claude Lark. Birdie died at the home of her daughter Oregon Hobbs at 804 12th St., Bethany, Missouri on 11 March, 1956. Her death record says Leland Grabill of Eagleville, MO was the informant and that she died of acute bronchial pneumonia.
Birdie's funeral was held at the Bogess funeral Home in Eagleville, Missouri, Rev. O. D. Hedges, officiating, and music was by the Hunsicker Family. Interment was in the Highland Cemetery, beside her husband, about 3 miles west of Eagleville, Missouri.
