Reeves, James H. "Rip," 94, retired peace officer, passed away Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008. Memorial services 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 at Woodland United Methodist Church. Survivors: son, Mike (Vici) Reeves of Overland Park; daughter, Della (Vann) Medlock of DeSoto, Texas; grandchildren, Chris Reeves and Kelly Uhlenhopp; numerous nieces and nephews. Jim's wife and childhood sweetheart, Yvonne, recently preceded him in death following 70 years of marriage. Jim was the youngest of four, born Nov. 19, 1913 in Gridley, Kan. As a young man, Jim worked for his father-in-law in construction trades. During WWII he served in the Aleutian Islands with the U.S. Navy Seabees. Prior to his death, "Rip" was the oldest living retired Wichita Police Officer. He began his law enforcement career as a patrolman in 1940 and retired in 1965 as Colonel of the Investigation Division. He graduated from the FBI Academy, was a skilled Polygraph operator, competed on the Wichita Police pistol team and taught criminology at WSU. He later became Superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol. Rip was a corporate director of security in Kansas City, Chief of Police in Garden City, adjusted aircraft claims for Lloyds of London (he learned to pilot aircraft through an advertising promotion at Yingling Cessna and went on to obtain a private pilot's license) and was elected to three terms in the Kansas Legislature. He ended his career with the District Attorney's office as Chief Investigative Officer at the age of 75. Rip was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman. He loved his God, his Country, and his family and friends without reservation. He led a life to be admired and respected.
