EASTLAND - Walter Lenard Tucker passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2005 in Eastland. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday at the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with military honors is in the Old Gordon Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6~8 P.M.

Walter was born in Carbon, Texas on January 29, 1921 to Erie Thomas and Jerusha Emiline Fields Tucker. Walter grew up on farms in the Pleasant Hill area west of Carbon. He learned the value of work when he was young, and learned to endure hardship which later helped pull him through many difficult situations.

Walter, along with his older brother, joined the U.S. Army on March 17, 1941. He took basic training at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, and later trained at Camp Polk, Louisiana. After his stateside training he was sent to the Philippines. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as well as many camps in the Philippines. The Philippines were later surrendered to the Japanese, and Walter was a Prisoner of War of the Japanese for 3 years and five months. He was held in several prison camps both in the Philippines and Japan. He endured untold hardships including beatings, starvation, diseases, and humiliation. He was a survivor of the infamous Bataan death march. Walter was awarded the Purple Heart Medal some fifty years after being wounded as a POW.

Following the war, he returned home and transferred from the Army to the U.S. Air Force. He married Dorothy Steddum Powers, the mother of his children. Walter later returned to the Philippines to serve his country again, in peacetime. Walter served in Spain and various Air Force Bases in the United States, including Dyess AFB in Abilene when it first opened.

After 20 years of serving his country, Walter retired from the Air Force in Minot, North Dakota. He married Yvonne KcKinnon and continued living in North Dakota, working at Grand Forks AFB for ten years. In 1972 he moved to Eastland. Yvonne passed away in 1975, and Walter later married Ida Lou Putnam. She also preceded him in death. During this period, Walter drove a school bus for ten years for the Eastland School system. Walter later located a lady he had known before his enlistment into the Army. It so happened Lavern Savage was unattached and after a whirlwind romance, Walter and Lavern were married in Eastland with the Honorable Judge Scott Bailey officiating on November 15, 1999. Even with his hard knocks in life, Walter was a fun loving person who was enjoyable to be around. He was loved by his family and many, many friends and will be greatly missed by all of them.

Survivors include his wife, Lavern of Eastland; 3 sons, who are all retired military, Walter, Jr. and wife Pam of Quinlan, Texas, Michael and wife Eirene of Alamogordo, New Mexico, and Patrick and wife Susan of Pueblo, Colorado; 3 stepdaughters, Patricia Young and husband Bill of Kilgore, Terry Ewing and husband J.R. of The Colony, Texas, and June Nevens of Shady Hills, Florida; special stepdaughter, Vera Hogan of Odessa; special stepson, Charles Hoskenson and wife Sherry of Oregon; stepchildren, Leslie Culbertson and wife Kathy of Benbrook, Linda Schatzle and husband Wayne of Lake Belton, and Janece Waits of Gordon.
