COURIER JOURNAL OBITUARY – 06/11/1958
James A. Yunker, retired gas engineer of Louisville Gas & Electric Company, died at 10:30 a.m. yesterday at his home, 1824 Rosedale. Yunker, 67, was a native of Louisville and attended the University of Louisville. He began work with L. G. & E. in 1918 as a clerk in the natural gas department. In 1928, he became superintendent of the department and in 1948 was appointed gas engineer. He retired in 1956. Noted for making a hobby of hobbies, Yunker specialized in gardening and in collecting lead soldiers, stamps, and antiques. He was recognized as an authority on glass and was president of Glass Handicrafters. In the early 1930's he supplied general information through a radio program known as "Dean Wise." Yunker was a member of the Kentucky Parole Board, Torch Club, Filson Club, and Deer Park Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruth Veazey Yunker; three daughters, Mother Rose Yunker of the Sisters of Sacred Heart, St. Louis; Mrs. Joseph Richardson, and Mrs. Charles Bisig; two sons, James A. Yunker, Jr., Pittsfield, Mass., and John M. Yunker, Circleville, Ohio, and 15 grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the residence. Burial will be in St. Louis Cemetery.
