Louis Amateis, artist. Louis Amateis was a designer & sculptor and was known in the art world both in the United States and in Europe. Amateis was awarded a gold medal by the Royal Academy of Turin, Italy for his work. At the 1880 national exposition there, he won a silver medal. He created a monument to King Emmanuel in Turin and has sculptures in the Palace of Fine Arts. He emigrated from Italy in 1883. He became a professor at the George Washington University (known then as Columbia University) in Washington, D.C. and founded the School of Architecture and Fine Arts. He was a member of the National Sculpture Society and the New York Architectural League. He left a wife and 3 children.
