Marriage record (Pub. Press and Banner) revealed Gus Smith and Mabel C. Upchurch married on Jan 25, 1893 in Abbeville County, South Carolina.

Augustus was twenty-five and Mabel was twenty-five when they married.

Their son:

William Joel Smith (b.1894 d.1962)

They had been married almost two years and their son was one week old when Mabel died of childbirth complications on December 21, 1894.

The 1900 census revealed Augustus was a General Merchant and a widower. He was born in Nov 1867 and he and his parents were born in South Carolina. He and his son, Joel were living with his father and family in the mansion on Main Street in Abbeville, Abbeville County, South Carolina. Household members: Joel W (66), Sarah L (64), Mary L (42), Augustus M (32) and Joel W (5).

Augustus Marshall Smith was about thirty-five and Lucy White was twenty-five when they married in 1902 in Abbeville County, South Carolina.

They became the proud owner of the mansion on Main Street in 1908 when his father, Joel died.

The 1910 census revealed Augustus was a retail merchant of a dry goods store. They owned their home free of mortgage. Lucy and her parents were born in South Carolina. Augustus had been married twice and Lucy once. They had been married seven years, had two children and both still living. Household members: Augustus M (42), Lucy W (32), George W (5), Augustus M (3) and a servant, Janie Valentine (18).

The 1920 census revealed Augustus was an employer of a general merchandise store. His son Joel and wife were living with them. Household members: Augustus M (52), Lucy (41), W Joel (25), Kathleen (24), George (15), Augustus (13) and Sarah (8).

They had been married about twenty-six years when Augustus died in 1928.

Death records revealed Augustus Marshall Smith was a merchant and was married. He was born Nov 16, 1867 his parents were W Joel Smith and Ione Allen. He died at 4:15 p.m. Mar 2, 1928 of heart disease at the age of 60 Years 3 months and 15 days in Abbeville County, South Carolina. Interment was at Long Cane Cemetery.

After his wife, Lucy died in 1950, the mansion was owned by their children. By 1993, the last three owners were; George Smith's widow, Augustus Smith Jr's widow and his only daughter, Sarah Smith Wilson. Sarah Smith Wilson lived there until her death in 1993 and the house was sold to a retired General and his wife who have made all the necessary repairs to retain it's beauty. Over the years the house address changed from 88 N. Main to 400 N. Main and finally became 500 N. Main.

{{City Shocked At Death of A.M. Smith. - Here Friday Afternoon. - Funeral Held Sunday With Interment At Long Cane Cemetery. - The entire community was saddened Friday to learn of the sudden death of Augustus Marshall Smith who passed away at his home on North Main street at 4 o'clock Friday afternoon, following an attack of angina pectoris. Mr. Smith, although not in the best of health for the past two years, continued to attend to his business and farming interests.

He left his store Thursday following a slight attack but his condition caused no alarm until a short while before his death Friday afternoon.

Mr. Smith for a long number of years has been one of Abbeville's most prominent merchants and planters and was one of the wealthiest men in the country. Following the death of his father, W. Joel Smith, he succeeded to the business in which he continued until his death. He was a man of the highest Christian standards, living an exemplary life, taking much interest in the affairs of his church.

At the time of his death he was in his sixty-first year, having been born November 16, 1867. He was the son of W. Joel and Ione Allen Smith. Mr Smith as a young man attended school at Fishburne Military Academy, Staunton, Va.

Mr. Smith was twice married, the first time in 1893 to Miss Mabel Upchurch. To this union was born one son, W. Joel Smith, who survives. In 1902 he married Miss Lucy White, daughter of Sarah Perrin and George White. Three children survive this union, George W. Smith, of New Haven, Conn.; Augustus M. Smith Jr. of Davidson College, and Miss Sarah Smith, a senior of the Abbeville High school. One brother J. Allen Smith Sr. also survives.

Funeral services for Mr. Smith were conducted at the home Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock by his pastor, Rev. G.M. Telford of the Presbyterian Church of this city with interment following in Long Cane Cemtery. The services were attended by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends and the floral offerings were many and beautiful.

Pallbearers were: Messr. E.R. Thomson, J.R. Glenn, R.L. Mabry, J. Allen Long, Fred Cason, J.M. Mars and W.D. Wilson.

Cothran of Greenville; Mrs. Jennie Cothran, Miss Mary Perrin Cothran, Mr. and Mrs. Cothran Perrin, Mr. and Mrs. Hebert L. Allen, Mr. Joel Wier and Mr. Aiken of Greenwood; Messrs. George and Lewis Perrin, Mrs. Agnes Peake and Mr. and Mrs Will Walker of Union; Mrs Virginia Neville and son, DeWyatt Neville of Clinton, Mrs. E.H. Wilkes and Miss Irene Wilkes of Laurens, and Lewis W. Perrin of Spartanburg.}}

Augustus lived to age 60.
