~ღ~ Beloved Grandmother ~ღ~

Mallie, aka "Bebo", was born in Barren County to L.N. and Bettie Chapman Jackman. She went to Chestnut Grove school as a child w/her brothers, sisters, and lifelong friends. One of her delights beginning as a child was the circuit preacher arriving, usually once a month. She spoke of her excitement during the walk from home to Mount Tabor Baptist Church where she was raised. Her great granddaddy, Wm T Jackman, donated the land on which Mount Tabor Church, Barren County's oldest Church, was built, and still stands. She and Buford Young Smith were married on the 1st of December, 1917. They moved from Barren County to Louisville a little over a year following the birth of their only child, a daughter, Ruby Louise. Bebo had many brothers and sisters with whom she was very close. All of them preceded her in death, bringing an unrelenting sadness during her last years. She was past president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, South Louisville Chapter; member of Victory Memorial Baptist Church, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Auxiliary, and Wilder Park Widows Club. She loved to read, had a passion to learn, and was our family historian in keeping journals of daily living, family history, special events (for many years she noted each "big snow" on old wallpaper in their kitchen pantry), news clippings, and taking piles of notes I'm still going through. When she died, "our family library burned to the ground", and a great love of my life left behind many years of loving memories.

Her loving stepmother:
- Jim Ella Higdon Jackman

I know an unpretentious house
locked in the embrace of trees.
Its faded walls, graying roof
mellowed with memories.

A house that grew into a home
with joy and sorrow each a part.
Braving storm, bearing heat,
A family near its heart.

The years have made it beautiful,
for time, in taking daily toll,
Of pristine walls and shiny roof,
Has left it with a Soul.
