James was 1 1964 graduate of Raytown High School. James had enlisted in the US Army Reserves, before going into extended active duty.
When James arrived in Vietnam 23 April 1969, he was assigned as the platoon commander of 3rd Platoon, C Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Calvary, 1st Calvary Division, USARV. C Company found a hostile bunker complex 12 kilometers west northwest of the Minh Thanh Airfield. While searching and clearing of the bunker complex a hostile claymore was detonated and James died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body from the explosion.
Survived by his parents, Ted and Bessie Kathleen Chittwood, and his sister; Sara Chittwood all of 5304 Raytown Road, Raytown, Missouri.
